The two tests we offer
Both are explained fully before the appointment, so you know what will happen and what your child will feel.
BERA (brainstem evoked response audiometry)
A more detailed test for children who cannot take part in a standard hearing test. Small sensors are placed on the head, and soft sounds play while your child rests or sleeps. This one needs a sleepy child, so it is planned around nap times.
For newborns and infants
A re-check is worthwhile if a newborn screening was missed, gave a referral, or needs confirming.
Preparing for a BERA
A little preparation helps the test go well, because it works best with a sleepy child.
- Plan around sleep.BERA works best with a settled, sleepy child. Keep the day before calm, and if your child still naps, try to time the appointment so they are ready to sleep.
- Keep the morning short.A slightly earlier start than usual can help your child settle. Bring whatever helps them sleep: a favourite blanket, a soft toy, a familiar pillow.
- Feed before you arrive.A full, comfortable child sleeps more easily, so feed shortly before the appointment if you can.

My baby was referred after the newborn screening. Does that mean they cannot hear?
Not necessarily. A refer result means further assessment is recommended, not that your child cannot hear. Newborn screenings are quick, and many babies are referred simply for a re-check. We’ll test properly and explain what we find.
Can you do this at home?
No. Audiology here is a centre-based service at Kalyan Nagar, because the equipment and setup need a controlled room. We offer tele-Audiology guidance remotely for families who have moved away after a device or a service, but the testing itself happens at the centre.
Do we need a doctor’s referral?
